In bringing Charles Dickens’ beloved novel to life, Lionel Bart’s “Oliver!” takes audiences on a wild adventure through Victorian England. Left in a Workhouse, the orphaned Oliver is under the influence of Widow Corney and the pompous Mr Bumble who sells him to Mr Sowerberry, the local undertaker. Not happy, Oliver Twist runs away and heads for London where he enters an underworld of theft and violence, searching for a home, a family, and – most importantly – for love. When Oliver is picked up on the street by a boy named the Artful Dodger, he is welcomed into a gang of child pickpockets led by the conniving, but charismatic, Fagin. When Oliver is falsely accused of a theft he didn’t commit, he is rescued by Mr Brownlow, a kind and wealthy gentleman, much to the dismay of Fagin’s violent sidekick, Bill Sykes. Caught in the middle is the warm-hearted Nancy, who is trapped under Bill’s thumb, but desperate to help Oliver, with tragic results.
This is a show that has lasted the test of time and is as popular now as it was when it was first performed. Key to its success is the songs of Lionel Bart – great numbers such as “As Long As He Needs Me”, “Consider Yourself”, “Who Will Buy”, “Food, Glorious Food”, “Boy For Sale”, Where is Love” and “Pick a Pocket or Two“ are well known to lovers of musicals and, over the years, have been sung by so many great performers. Definitely a show not to be missed!
